Routine Exams and Dental Cleanings
Great dental hygiene starts with routine cleanings for your child with a pediatric dentist. At Shining Dental, pediatric dentist experts in keeping your child’s smile happy and healthy. We recommend bringing your child in for their first visit by age 1 or when their first tooth has erupted. During your child’s first visit, their dentist will gather baseline information to evaluate how your child’s teeth will grow and fit together, discuss proper brushing techniques, nutrition and snacking habits, and pacifier and thumb sucking habits.
Digital X-Rays for Less Radiation
Dental X-rays are images of your jaw and teeth taken right in your pediatric dentist office. There are several different types of x-rays, and they allow your dentist to take a closer look at the growth and development of your child’s mouth and overall dental health. It can be used to detect cavities, diagnose bone disease, examine erupting teeth, and evaluate dental injuries. Modern digital x-rays use a very low level of radiation to capture close-up images of your child’s teeth and gums. Taken only when necessary, these x-rays are a safe way to evaluate your child’s dental needs.

Tooth-Colored Fillings
Dental fillings are a quick, simple procedure to restore your child’s tooth and bring their smile back to optimal health. Dental fillings, or composite fillings, are a non-toxic, durable material, and are typically tooth-colored to be cosmetically pleasing and blend in with your child’s smile. These durable, tooth-colored fillings provide resistance to normal “wear and tear” and moderate pressure caused by chewing. These composite fillings are used on both front and back teeth to help maintain the tooth’s natural color. Some of these materials release fluoride, which helps protect your child’s teeth from further decay and decrease their risk to caries. The purpose of a dental filling is to keep your child’s smile healthy and bright!
Phase I/ II orthodontics
Most orthodontic problems can be treated in one phase of comprehensive treatment, however there are a few exceptions. Two-phase orthodontic treatment can be used to help the jaws develop to ensure adequate space for all of the permanent teeth, especially the permanent canines.
The goal of Phase Two treatment is to make sure teeth are in their proper places for good function, a healthy bite and a pleasing appearance. As per the American Association of Orthodontists’ (AAO) recommendation that all children have their first orthodontic evaluation no later than age 7. If an orthodontic problem is developing, dentist will be able to monitor growth and development so that your child can have the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are a safe and effective way to protect your teeth’s grooved and pitted chewing surfaces from bacteria and an acidic environment. Sealants are typically applied and most effective on the surfaces of the back molars where most cavities develop.
Extractions
It is our goal as pediatric dentists to keep your child’s smile happy and healthy, but in some cases, a tooth extraction may be necessary to maintain optimal oral health. Tooth extractions are recommended when a tooth is badly damaged and unfortunately can’t be repaired with a dental crown or a filling. This could be due to tooth decay, infection, or dental trauma. In some cases, pediatric dentist may recommend a tooth extraction to relieve crowding for orthodontic treatment. Even though these baby teeth will fall out, a tooth extraction can keep your child from experiencing pain, swelling, and discomfort caused by a damaged tooth. If a decayed or infected tooth is left untreated, the infection can spread into the nerve of the tooth and eventually the jawbone.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride can help promote a bright and happy smile! Using fluoride regularly can help decrease your child’s risk of tooth decay. With a decreased risk of cavities, this also means a lower risk of needing a tooth extraction and less pain and discomfort that accompanies tooth decay.
Topical fluoride is simply fluoride that is applied directly to your child’s teeth by a dental professional. During their bi-annual appointment, your child’s dentist or dental hygienist will apply the fluoride by painting it onto their teeth. The application is quick and easy, plus it only takes a few minutes.
